As Portland faces soaring temperatures, reaching up to 100 degrees Fahrenheit, veterinarians emphasize the importance of keeping pets cool, hydrated, and indoors as much as possible. It’s crucial to be vigilant for signs of heat-related stress in animals.
PORTLAND, Ore. — Just like humans, pets can suffer from extreme heat conditions. With a prolonged heat wave on the horizon—forecasted to bring two consecutive days of 100-degree weather followed by three days in the upper 90s—pet owners must take proactive measures to ensure their furry friends remain safe.
“If it’s uncomfortable for you outside, it’s equally uncomfortable for your pets,” stated Shana O’Marra from Dove Lewis Veterinary emergency Animal Hospital during an interview with KGW in 2021.
O’Marra provided several tips to help keep pets protected during these hot spells.
Essential Tips for Keeping Pets Safe in hot Weather
- Keep your pet indoors in air conditioning or a cool room whenever possible.
- If you need to take them outside for a walk, make it brief and avoid hot pavement that can burn their paws.
- “Always check the ground temperature with your hand before taking your pet out,” O’Marra advised. “If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for them.”
- Ensure that walks include plenty of water breaks; carry extra water not just for yourself but also for any other animals you may encounter that might not be adequately prepared.
- This advice extends beyond dogs and cats; all outdoor animals are susceptible to heat stress.
- “Heat-related issues can affect any pet,” O’Marra noted. “The best approach is to create a comfortable environment and maintain it.”
- Watch out for symptoms of overheating such as excessive panting or drooling, bright red gums or tongue membranes, and even seizures if left unchecked.
The Oregon Humane Society recommends additional strategies to help keep pets happy and healthy during extreme temperatures:
