As Portland faces soaring temperatures, reaching up to 100 degrees Fahrenheit, veterinarians emphasize the‍ importance of keeping pets cool,⁤ hydrated, and indoors as⁤ much as possible. It’s crucial to be vigilant for signs of heat-related stress in animals.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Just like humans, pets can suffer from extreme heat conditions. With a prolonged heat wave‌ on the horizon—forecasted to bring two consecutive days of 100-degree weather followed by three days in the upper 90s—pet owners must take proactive measures to⁢ ensure their furry friends‍ remain safe.

“If it’s uncomfortable for you outside, it’s equally‌ uncomfortable for your pets,” stated⁣ Shana O’Marra from‍ Dove Lewis ‍Veterinary emergency Animal Hospital during an⁢ interview‍ with KGW in 2021.

O’Marra provided several‍ tips to‌ help ‍keep pets protected during these hot spells.

Essential Tips for Keeping Pets Safe in hot Weather

  • Keep your pet indoors in air conditioning or a cool room whenever possible.
  • If you need to take them outside for a walk, make it brief ⁣and avoid ⁣hot pavement that can burn their‍ paws.
  • “Always ‍check the⁣ ground temperature with your hand‍ before taking your pet ‍out,” O’Marra advised. “If it’s too hot for you,‌ it’s too hot for them.”
  • Ensure that walks⁢ include plenty of water ⁤breaks; carry extra water not just for yourself but also for ‍any other animals you may encounter ⁤that might not be adequately prepared.
  • This advice extends beyond dogs and cats; all outdoor animals‍ are susceptible to ⁢heat stress.
  • “Heat-related issues⁣ can affect any pet,” ⁣O’Marra noted. “The best approach is to create a comfortable environment and maintain it.”
  • Watch out for‌ symptoms of⁢ overheating such as excessive panting or drooling, bright red gums or tongue membranes, and even seizures if left⁣ unchecked.

The Oregon Humane⁤ Society recommends additional‌ strategies to⁢ help keep pets happy and healthy during extreme temperatures:

  • Ensure drinking bowls are filled with fresh cold water at all times
  • Create shaded areas where pets can rest comfortably outdoors
  • A misting ⁢hose can provide relief by cooling down outdoor spaces
  • A kiddie pool offers dogs a fun way to cool off while playing
  • < li >Monitor pets around bodies of water since not all animals are natural swimmers

  • Schedule exercise sessions or playtime⁢ early ‍in the morning or later in the‍ evening when temperatures drop
  • Never leave pets‌ unattended outdoors when it gets excessively warm; bring them inside instead
  • Avoid leaving ⁢your pet alone at home while running errands—especially‌ inside vehicles where temperatures soar⁤ quickly
  • light-colored furred animals may be prone to sunburn; consult with your veterinarian before⁤ applying sunscreen on sensitive areas ⁢like their noses
