The Museum of Contemporary Art is set to pay tribute to Sofia Coppola during its 2025 Film Gala. This prestigious event, sponsored by Chanel, will take place on November 12 in New York City.
The annual Film Gala at MoMA celebrates the evolution and preservation of the museum’s film collection, which boasts over 30,000 films and approximately 1.5 million film stills. The gala also features a variety of screenings, premieres, festivals, and retrospectives that honour filmmakers—actors, writers, and directors—who have significantly impacted the cinematic landscape.
Coppola is undoubtedly deserving of this recognition; she began her acting career early in life and has since written and directed nine feature films. Five of her works are part of MoMA’s collection: “The virgin Suicides” (1999), “Lost in Translation” (2003), “Marie Antoinette” (2006), “Somewhere” (2010), and “The Bling Ring” (2013). Her screenplay for “Lost in Translation” earned her an Academy award for Best Original Screenplay while also garnering nominations for Best Director and Best Picture.

Rajendra roy, MoMA’s Celeste Bartos Chief Curator of Film, expressed his thoughts in a statement released Monday: “Building lasting relationships with artists is one of the most significant privileges—and responsibilities—for an institution like MoMA. sofia Coppola has been part of our artistic community since she emerged as a celebrated director over two decades ago. We honored her back in 2004 as part of our ’Work in Progress’ series; it brings us great joy to welcome her back now as a leading figure in cinema.”
In conjunction with the Film Gala festivities, MoMA will showcase all nine feature films by Coppola along with her short film from 1998 titled “Lick The Star.” This special series named “Sofia Coppola: A Tribute” will be held at the museum’s Roy and Niuta Titus Theaters from october 30 through November 16.
