ST. PETERSBURG,Fla. - The Pinellas County Board of Commissioners is set to deliberate on stricter regulations for pet retail establishments during their meeting scheduled for Tuesday at 6 p.m. This initiative follows the issuance of nearly 400 citations to local pet stores over the past year by county animal services, prompting significant concern from animal welfare advocates.

The push for reform stems from repeated violations related to housing standards, sanitation practices, and inadequate care of sick animals.
The Context:
While neighboring Hillsborough and Pasco counties implemented bans on the sale of dogs and cats in retail settings back in 2020, Pinellas County has yet to follow suit. St. Petersburg has enacted its own ban; however, other areas within the county continue to see new pet stores opening their doors.

This October,Elizabeth Olson, founder of the animal Justice Project Force, reviewed county records and uncovered widespread infractions including unqualified staff diagnosing and treating sick animals without veterinary oversight; overcrowded cages; insufficient access to water; and failure to seperate ill dogs from healthy ones.
