Support for ‌Pets During the Holiday Season in Anchorage

ANCHORAGE, Alaska⁢ (KTUU)⁢ -‌ As the holiday season approaches, food banks across the state are receiving generous contributions. However, it’s not just humans who benefit from this spirit of giving; pets are ⁣also set to⁢ receive significant‌ support from Anchorage‍ Animal care ‍and Control‌ (AACC).

A Community Initiative to Alleviate Stress

“Our community pet food bank is a program we initiated to help ease ⁣some of the pressures families face,”⁤ explained Joel Jorgensen, AACC’s Community Outreach Manager. Financial constraints often add⁣ to these pressures during this time ⁣of year.

The Impact of Budget Constraints

According to Jorgensen, “On average, we assist around ⁣400⁣ different households each month.” He⁢ noted that during the holiday season, ‌demand⁣ at their ‍food bank considerably⁤ increases due to events like Thanksgiving‌ and christmas.

more Than Just ⁤Food: Additional Support for‍ pets

AACC⁤ is also distributing items such as toys, collars, and leashes alongside pet food. “The last thing anyone should have to⁣ do during ⁤Christmas or any ‌holiday is give up their pet due ⁣to financial‍ issues. It’s⁣ unfair both to the⁢ animal and‌ the family that cares for them,” Jorgensen ‍emphasized.

The Generosity of Local donors

This mission is supported by local donors‌ like Megan Miller. She shared‍ her experience: “I come here every fall‍ for my dog’s vaccinations and thought I could contribute⁤ in some ‍way. While shopping⁢ at Carrs recently, I noticed cat‍ food on sale and decided it was a perfect prospect.”

The High Demand for Cat Food

Miller’s donation came at an opportune ⁤moment since cat‍ food has become ‍one of the most sought-after items at AACC’s shelter. “Currently, our greatest ⁤need is cat food—both wet and dry varieties—as it remains our ‌most⁢ requested item in⁤ the food ‌bank,” Jorgensen⁢ stated.

Open doors for Donations ‍Every Day

AACC welcomes donations seven days a ‍week along with pickups for those in need.
