Urgent Call to Action: Cat Owners Advised to Neuter Pets Amid Kitten Surge
A local animal rescue organization is urging cat owners not to be caught off guard this summer, as the number of unneutered stray cats has led to a important increase in kitten births.
Officials at Bath Cats and Dogs Home report that they are currently caring for nearly 30 kittens along with their mothers, manny of whom appear to have been abandoned.The ongoing cost-of-living crisis has made it increasingly arduous for pet owners to manage unexpected litters, while a decrease in adoptions leaves these animals without permanent homes.
As temperatures rise, cats tend to roam more freely, mate, and scavenge for food. This behavior has prompted the shelter’s management to strongly encourage pet owners to neuter their cats as a preventive measure against unwanted litters.
The Importance of Neutering
Cats can become pregnant as early as four months old and may produce several litters each year if not neutered—potentially resulting in hundreds of kittens throughout their lives. This situation exacerbates the overpopulation crisis faced by shelters and rescue organizations that are already struggling financially.
the costs associated with caring for a mother cat and her litter can be substantial; Bath Cats and Dogs Home estimates that it takes approximately £1,700 to provide care for them over three months. In just one day last May, 15 new cats were brought into the shelter.
A Personal Rescue Story
Chrissie Anderton recently rescued an abandoned cat along with her six two-day-old kittens from a field in Bradford-on-Avon, Wiltshire. After nurturing them for two weeks, she realized that keeping seven additional cats was not feasible given her existing four pets.
“It was heartbreaking saying goodbye when I took them into Bath Cats and Dogs Home,” she shared. “Though, I am reassured knowing they will receive proper care there.”
Tackling Overpopulation Through Neutering Initiatives
In 2024 alone, the rescue center performed 185 neutering surgeries within its veterinary suite—an effort believed to have prevented around 1,700 unwanted kittens from entering the community.
“It’s incredibly distressing when pregnant or nursing cats are left on their own outdoors without food or protection from predators,” stated a spokesperson from the organization. “Fortunately, many of our current rescues have been brought in by RSPCA inspectors or concerned members of the public.”
A Call for support: ‘Pussycat Summer’
The charity anticipates an unprecedented number of kitten births over the coming months due to seasonal trends; thus they have launched an appeal named ‘Pussycat Summer’ seeking donations specifically aimed at supporting these vulnerable animals.

The latest RSPCA Kindness Report reveals that 78% of pet owners acknowledge rising costs associated with pet care over the past year.

“We encourage you to consult your veterinarian about getting your cat neutered as soon as possible in order to avoid unwanted litters.”
