National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day: A Call to Action
Understanding the Current Situation in Shelters
PORTLAND (WGME) — This Wednesday is recognized as National Adopt a shelter pet Day.
The Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland, located in Westbrook, reports that it provides care for thousands of abandoned and displaced animals each year.
The Challenges Facing Shelters Today
Despite the day’s significance, shelter officials are reporting an increase in the number of dogs being taken in while adoptions have decreased.
Matt blanchard from the Animal Refuge League attributes this trend to various factors affecting pet owners.“One major reason we’re seeing people surrender their pets right now is due to housing instability and financial challenges,” he explained. “It’s heartbreaking because these individuals genuinely want to keep their pets but are facing tough circumstances.”
According to recent statistics from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), approximately one in five pet owners have considered giving up their pets due to economic hardships.
h2>Ways You Can Make a Difference
If adopting isn’t feasible for you at this time, there are several other ways you can contribute positively:
– Consider making a donation directly to your local shelter.
– Volunteer your time; shelters often need extra hands.
– If long-term commitment isn’t possible, think about fostering an animal temporarily.
On this special day, any donations made will be matched by sponsors up to $15,000—making your contribution even more impactful.
Together we can make a difference in the lives of these deserving animals!
