A Glimpse into Maaya Sakamoto’s Journey
Nurtured in Tokyo, Maaya embarked on her career as a child actress at just eight years old. She made waves in the music scene with her debut single “Yakusoku wa Iranai” in 1996. Following the success of her album “You Can’t Catch Me,” which topped Oricon charts in 2011, she began collaborating with various artists across genres. since releasing “Singer-Songwriter” in 2013, she has also taken on songwriting roles for numerous musicians.
The summer of July 2021 marked another achievement when her radio show “Nutrition M,” which she had hosted for two decades reached its milestone of broadcasting its thousandth episode as it entered its twenty-first year. In May of 2022, she unveiled a double A-side single titled “Sumire / Kotoba ni Dekinai,” featuring compositions by Shigeru Kishida.
To date, Maaya has released an notable total of thirty-five singles and eleven full-length albums. As an accomplished lyricist alongside creating original songs for herself—she has penned tracks like Kinki Kids’ hit “Hikari no Kehai,” Mamoru Miyano’s popular tune “Toumei,” and Walküre’s memorable piece “Kaze wa Yokoku Naku Fuku.” Additionally, she published a collection of lyrics entitled “Shishu” through Kadokawa.
A recipient of accolades such as the prestigious Kazuo Kikuta Theater Award for portraying Jerusha in the musical adaptation “Daddy-Long-Legs,” she’s also gained recognition for her recent essay series titled “Manpukuron – Asu ni Kaburitsuke.”
Beyond singing prowess; she’s recognized as an engaging voice actress and radio personality whose unique vocal style resonates not only within Japan but globally too.
