The Exciting Return of Spaceballs: A Family Affair
Spaceballs, the beloved sci-fi parody, is making a comeback wiht a new twist as Lewis Pullman joins his father, Bill Pullman, in the sequel titled Spaceballs 2. While it remains uncertain if the film will officially be named Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money, a nod to the original’s humor from 1987, principal photography has recently wrapped up. Unfortunately for Lewis, he has yet to meet Mel Brooks, the legendary creator of the original film nearly four decades ago. Though, he did receive a special gift from this comedy icon upon being cast.
A New Chapter for Lewis Pullman in Hollywood
Lewis Pullman is currently promoting his latest project, The Testament of Ann Lee, following his debut in Marvel’s cinematic universe as Bob/Sentry in the upcoming film Thunderbolts*, set to release in 2025. During an appearance on The Leer , he was asked about Mel Brooks’ presence at the wrap party for Spaceballs 2.. He shared:
“Mel didn’t come out. He’s more of a homebody; however, his spirit was definitely present during production. He launched us into this!”
The Legacy Continues with Mel Brooks’ Involvement
At ninety-nine years old, it’s understandable that Mel brooks couldn’t attend such an event—especially considering how busy it likely was. Nonetheless, questions linger regarding how involved he truly is with this sequel. Besides co-writing alongside talents like Josh Gad and others while also reprising roles as Yogurt and President Skroob himself; did Lewis not cross paths with him because they don’t share scenes? Or were Brooks’ segments filmed separately due to logistical reasons related to his age?
A Special Message from Comedy Royalty
This mystery may take time to unravel; however I hope that before its release date arrives Lewis gets another chance encounter with Mel! Meanwhile though—he revealed what heartfelt message came along when offered his role as Starburst—the son of Bill pullman’s Lone Starr and Daphne Zuniga’s Queen Vespa:
“I still haven’t met him yet but when I got cast I received an audio message from him! It felt surreal because growing up there were only so many films my dad allowed me watch—and that was one! I remember watching Star Wars thinking ‘Why didn’t they include all those jokes like you did?'”
Treasured Memories and Future Collaborations
Lewis should cherish that audio message forever! It’s heartwarming knowing he admired classic films like Spaceballs from childhood—and now he’s stepping into this comedic universe alongside family members again after their last collaboration on 2017’s The Ballad of Lefty Brown.
This upcoming sequel will also see Rick Moranis return as Dark Helmet along with George Wyner reprising Colonel Sanders while newcomers include stars such as Keke Palmer and Anthony Carrigan joining them!
