Escapism serves as the foundation for many contemporary romantic comedies, allowing audiences to momentarily forget their worries for about 90 minutes. We revel in the delightful charm of two individuals falling in love, and the allure of top-tier rom-coms lies in their ability to make our troubles fade away. Though, I also appreciate romantic films that incorporate a touch of cathartic realism—those that encourage reflection on love and relationships. One such film is A Good Indian Boy.
This film follows Naveen (Karan Soni) as he introduces his fiancé Jay (Jonathan Groff) to his traditional indian family. The family’s reaction is one of shock when they realise that Naveen’s future husband does not fit their expectations of a “good Indian boy.” While at first glance A Good Indian Boy may appear to be a typical story about boy meets boy and proposes marriage, it delves into deeper themes than one might expect, which is why I found it so compelling.
Warning: Spoilers for A Good Indian Boy ahead.

The Impact of Family on Relationships in A Good Indian Boy
The central conflict in A good Indian Boy revolves around Jay’s acceptance within Naveen’s family. It raises questions about whether they can embrace him fully and whether Naveen should even prioritize their acceptance. While his family acknowledges his happiness, there remains an underlying tension; particularly from his father who maintains emotional distance due to cultural expectations. His mother tries her best but struggles with how to support her son effectively.
Naveen’s family grapples not only with understanding his sexuality but also with traditional values—they are accustomed to more conventional paths like arranged marriages, as seen through the experiences of Naveen’s sister Arundhathi (Sunita Mani). Her own arranged marriage stands in stark contrast to naveen’s relationship with Jay—a white man adopted into an Indian household—which complicates matters further.
This narrative isn’t unique; many romantic films explore familial tensions affecting relationships. Yet what sets this film apart is its refusal to follow the cliché where characters hide their identities from loved ones. Instead, it focuses on how both Naveen and his family learn from each other while navigating traditions that don’t always align with personal desires.

Romance Beyond Isolation: The Role of External Influences
Many popular romantic comedies portray love as something that exists solely between two people without considering external influences—this perspective can be misleading. In reality, relationships are shaped by interactions beyond just the couple involved; families and friends play crucial roles too.
The degree of interaction someone has with their partner’s relatives frequently enough reflects how close-knit those families are or aren’t. If estrangement isn’t an issue, partners will likely engage frequently with each other’s families.
In A Good Indian Boy, while Naveen’s family adds pressure on his relationship with Jay initially, they ultimately contribute positively by helping create a memorable wedding experience together—a testament that sometimes external influences can enhance rather than hinder romance.
I believe we need more films showcasing couples facing outside challenges together because real-life relationships often involve navigating complex dynamics involving loved ones.
This movie illustrates beautifully how true love can endure familial pressures without dismissing them entirely—making it feel more authentic compared to other rom-coms out there today.
