OLD SAYBROOK, Conn. (WFSB) – classroom pets are making a comeback in the Former Saybrook school district after officials unanimously approved new security measures to ensure their safe presence in schools. These pets had been temporarily removed earlier this year due to safety concerns.
The Former Saybrook Board of Education has decided to reinstate classroom animals with specific guidelines aimed at addressing safety and allergy-related issues. A petition advocating for the return of these animals garnered over 300 signatures from community members.
The debate was ignited by Oscar, a bearded dragon residing in a third-grade classroom at Goodwin Elementary School, who was among the first pets removed due to concerns about allergies and liability risks.
in response, families within the district rallied around Oscar, initiating a petition and launching a “Free Oscar” campaign that captured the attention of school board members.
according to the newly established guidelines, teachers are required to inform parents about any classroom animals ahead of time to manage potential allergy concerns. Additionally, approval from the school nurse is necessary before any animal can be present in classrooms; they must also outline how they would handle any injuries related to these pets.
Moving forward, teachers will be responsible for covering all expenses associated with maintaining classroom animals, addressing financial concerns raised during board meetings regarding funding for these initiatives.
The unanimous decision by the board signifies that both Oscar and other classroom companions are once again welcome within Former Saybrook schools.
