CBS Data – A zoo in Denmark is appealing to the public for donations of small unwanted pets or horses to feed its carnivorous animals.
“In modern zoos,we have a duty to replicate the natural food chain for our animals — considering both their welfare and ethical standards,” stated Aalborg Zoo in a social media declaration.
The northern Danish zoo emphasized that chickens, rabbits, and guinea pigs are essential components of its predators’ diets, which require “whole prey,” similar to what they would hunt in their natural habitats.

Upon reading this headline, I was tempted to title my blog something like “Danish Zoo Seeks Unique Method to Attract Society’s Most Troubling pet Owners.” It seems that aalborg Zoo is indeed attempting something quiet bold. If someone named Mikkel shows up with a six-year-old Schnauzer that has been misbehaving repeatedly… if he’s trying to offer his family dog as a meal for a tiger, perhaps society would be better off without him. Clearly, the zoo made this controversial request as an attempt to draw attention from pet owners who may not be fit guardians of their animals—at least it could serve as public shaming.
Though, I doubt Aalborg Zoo intends on tossing perfectly healthy dogs into their lion enclosure. They do not mention dogs (or cats) in their appeal for “animal fodder.” While they don’t explicitly state they wouldn’t accept them either, I trust Denmark enough to believe that this isn’t the type of pet donation they’re looking for (or would even consider).
The Ethics Behind Animal Donations
I do have some lingering questions about what “healthy” truly means in this context…
“If you have an animal that is healthy and needs rehoming for various reasons, please feel free to donate it. The animals are humanely euthanized by trained staff and then used as food. This way nothing goes waste — ensuring natural behaviour patterns and nutrition for our predators,” stated Aalborg Zoo.
The zoo mentioned it accepts donations of rabbits, guinea pigs, and chickens on weekdays between 10 AM and 1 PM but limits donations to four at a time.
Defining ‘Healthy’
What exactly qualifies as “healthy”? My primary concern is whether animals nearing the end of life are considered “healthy” enough for consumption by captive predators? personally speaking, if I were at the end of my life journey, I’d prefer my body serve another creature rather than being buried underground. Why not? If science doesn’t want me anymore but there’s an opportunity for my remains to contribute positively elsewhere—sounds much better than decomposing beneath soil!
Euthanizing pets at life’s end isn’t uncommon; those who make such decisions aren’t necessarily cruel individuals. So if after euthanasia these pets can provide nourishment for hungry zoo inhabitants—I struggle with understanding why that’s problematic.
A Questionable Definition of Healthiness
I’m uncertain how Aalborg Zoo defines “healthy.” In nature when faced with hunger pangs many creatures will scavenge whatever they can find. However what constitutes “healthy” enough according to them might not align with traditional definitions regarding live prey requests.
Focusing on Specific Animals: rabbits & Guinea Pigs
Let’s set aside dogs and cats entirely from this discussion; let’s focus specifically on what Aalborg Zoo seeks: rabbits, guinea pigs—and chickens (weekdays between 10 AM – 1 PM). Sacrificing chickens doesn’t bother me; after all they’re bred primarily as livestock destined for consumption—a fact ingrained since childhood when learning about where meat comes from! As far as rabbits go—I’ve never eaten one myself but know others do enjoy rabbit dishes too! Elmer Fudd hunting wabbits has been iconic entertainment across generations!
But guinea pigs present more difficulty emotionally speaking—they’re typically viewed solely as pets rather than livestock! If you’ve ever purchased one you likely heard yoru child express love towards it passionately! When acquiring any animal purely meant as companionship… unless it’s posing serious danger—it feels wrong handing over such beloved creatures directly into predator jaws!
