Transforming Shelter Dogs into Adoptable Companions
OAKLAND PARK, Fla. — Every day,countless shelter dogs are overlooked for various reasons,but one dedicated individual is using his unique talents to enhance their chances of finding forever homes.
Brian Sugerman, a skilled dog trainer and pet photographer, has captured the essence of over 10,000 dogs throughout his 25-year career.
Utilizing playful animal sounds and an array of professional equipment, he ensures that each dog is photographed in the best light possible.
“for the past 15 years, I’ve been photographing shelter dogs at a rate of about ten per week,” Sugerman shared.
He generously volunteers his time and expertise to Animal Aid rescue, driven by a singular purpose.
“I aim to capture images where the dogs are looking directly at me; this creates a connection with potential adopters,” he explained.
Sugerman recognizes that compelling photographs reveal each dog’s personality and substantially increase their chances of being adopted.
“Most sessions can be chaotic; though, we only need a fleeting moment of pure joy. When we achieve that shot,it can truly change their lives,” Sugerman remarked.
Patiens is key as he employs various props to elicit desired reactions from the pups while making amusing noises during photo sessions.
“These dogs frequently enough arrive feeling anxious; it’s essential to give them time and something valuable,” Sugerman noted.
This “valuable item” often turns out to be slices of turkey!
“Treats are incredibly motivating for them—if they’re not interested in treats, it becomes quite challenging,” he added.
The Importance of Training Alongside Photography
Though, capturing stunning images isn’t all that Sugerman does; he also plays an integral role in training these animals.
“The issue with many shelter dogs is that they often lack training and can pose challenges for families,” Sugerman explained. “We work on enhancing their skills so they can make better choices.”
