Essential Winter Care Tips for Dog Owners
Jonas Silva, the visionary behind the nonprofit organization Canines of mott Haven, recently shared vital advice with Files 12 regarding how dog owners can prepare for an impending snowstorm this weekend.
Preparing Your Dog for Cold Weather
As temperatures plummet, it’s crucial to ensure that dogs are properly outfitted with protective gear such as booties and jackets.Silva emphasizes that while dressing your pet is a critically important first step in safeguarding them against harsh weather conditions, there are additional precautions to consider.
“Limit your walking time to the bare minimum,” Silva advised. “We want to prevent any instances of frostbite on their paws or hypothermia.” He also suggested creating a protective barrier on their paws before they venture outside.
Paw Protection strategies
“Applying Vaseline can definitely help form a barrier against snow, ice, and salt,” he explained. “This keeps their paws protected and moisturized. While small amounts are non-toxic, excessive licking could lead to stomach upset or diarrhea. Instead, I highly recommend using a specialized balm designed for their paws and noses,” Silva added.
Selecting Safe De-icing Products
When it comes to clearing pathways around your home during winter months, opting for pet-friendly de-icers is essential. William Pedone from Van Nest Hardware highlighted this point: “Yes, Paws Safe Step is an excellent ice melter that’s intermediate grade; it won’t harm your pets or damage shrubs and sidewalks.”
The Importance of Cleaning Paws After Walks
Silva cautioned that not all salts are safe for animals; thus it’s critically important to clean and dry your dog’s paws upon returning home.”Even with booties on, some salt may still get trapped inside or they might just be dirty,” he noted. “So when you come back indoors, make sure you remove the booties and wash their feet thoroughly with soapy water—pay special attention between their toes.”
Avoid Off-Leash Walking in Snowy Conditions
An additional safety tip is never allowing dogs off-leash in snowy or icy conditions—especially during storms. The ASPCA warns that dogs can lose their scent amidst heavy snowfall and easily become lost or disoriented.
