Have you recently welcomed a new pet into your home? The Humane Society of Douglas County is here to share essential tips for new pet owners as we step into the New Year.
During the festive season, many families decide to add a furry companion to their household. For those who have adopted a new pet, it’s important to remember that this addition is not just a gift; it comes with significant responsibilities. The Douglas County Humane Society offers valuable advice for individuals bringing home a new animal, ensuring that dogs, cats, and other pets do not end up in shelters.
Jule Hand, the Fundraising and Outreach Coordinator at the humane society, notes that ther tends to be an increase in adoptions during the holiday period. one crucial piece of advice she emphasizes is the importance of pet-proofing your living space to keep both your new furry friend safe and protect your belongings.
“Pets are adjusting to their new environment and may take some time before they feel cozy,” Hand explained. “Pet-proofing is essential—especially for dogs who might chew on items or cats that may scratch furniture.”
While most pets are adopted with good intentions, they require both time and financial investment.Hand points out that not every family may be prepared for this commitment. She recommends establishing routines early on—such as feeding schedules and outdoor walks—to help integrate pets smoothly into family life.
“You’ll want to maintain your own property while also considering theirs,” she added. “They’re learning about their surroundings and how your lifestyle operates; it’s about working together as a cohesive unit.”
Hand also stresses the importance of ensuring all family members are ready for this new addition. Caring for a pet involves considerable effort.
If you find yourself struggling as a first-time pet owner—whether it’s concerns about behavior or eating habits—don’t hesitate to reach out for assistance. “Throughout the year, we see over 100 animals come through our doors,” Hand mentioned. “Currently, we have around 12 available for adoption while many more await in our care facilities. There’s always an ongoing need for finding loving homes for these animals.”
