Microchip Awareness Event at St. charles Parish Animal Shelter
The St. Charles Parish Animal Shelter is set too host a ”test the Chip” event on Friday, August 15, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at their facility located at 921 Deputy Jeff G. Watson Drive in Luling.
Free Microchip Testing and Registration Updates
During this event, pet owners can have their pets’ microchips checked and receive assistance with verifying and updating their registration details. Additionally, the shelter will offer complimentary microchipping services for pets that do not already have one; proof of residency is required for participation.
Ensuring Pet Safety During Emergencies
This initiative aims to help residents keep their pets safe and prepared in case of emergencies such as hurricanes. According to Shelter Manager Dr. Jena Troxler, nearly all microchipped animals that become separated from their owners during disasters are successfully reunited.
“It’s crucial that we ensure as many pets as possible are microchipped,” Troxler emphasized. “This event provides an excellent opportunity for pet owners to verify their pet’s registration details and update any changes in address or contact information so that the microchip company has accurate records.”
The Importance of Keeping Registration Current
Troxler highlighted that maintaining up-to-date registration is essential for effective microchipping.
“Pet owners should promptly update their information whenever they move or change phone numbers so the chip manufacturer can reach them if their pet is found,” she advised.”Another helpful tip is to add your pet’s details—including the microchip number, registered company name, and even a photo—to your contacts for easy access.”
Accessing Microchip Information Easily
Pet owners can visit aaha.org, where they can find contact details for the manufacturer of their pet’s chip and make necessary updates.
The Cost of Microchipping Services
The average cost charged by local veterinarians for implanting a microchip along with its registration typically hovers around $55; though, thanks to a grant received by the shelter, this upcoming event will be free of charge for participants.

Shelter Adoption Benefits Include Microchipping
Pets adopted from this shelter come fully vaccinated along with being microchipped as part of an $80 adoption fee package deal. Troxler noted that when animals are adopted out, staff members automatically register each chip under the new owner’s name—ensuring no additional membership fees with companies like 24 Hour Petwatch—and these registrations last indefinitely; however, it remains vital for adopters to keep this information current if they relocate or change contact numbers.

A New Resource: 24/7 Pet Scanning Station
The shelter has recently established a round-the-clock scanning station aimed at reuniting lost pets with their families more efficiently than ever before.
An estimated annual intake figure shows around 12,000 animals enter through its doors each year; now residents can utilize this self-service station without needing to bring lost pets into the facility frist—streamlining both admission processes while ensuring quicker reunions!
A Community Effort Supporting Lost Pets
A nonprofit institution named Turning Rescues Into Pets contributed significantly by raising funds totaling $100 worth of supplies needed specifically designated towards establishing this scanning service within our community!
Caring For Found Animals until Reunited With Owners

“Finders must take obligation until these lost companions return home or until animal control opens up again,” stated Troxler regarding proper care protocols.”
Shelter Hours Update:
The animal shelter has also revised its weekday hours: now opening daily at 10 AM from Monday through Friday.
This adjustment allows staff members dedicated time early in each day focused solely on essential animal care tasks such as feeding routines medical assessments cleaning procedures enrichment activities—all critical components contributing positively towards overall health outcomes among sheltered creatures!
