Have you‌ recently⁢ welcomed a new pet⁤ into your home? The Humane Society of⁢ Douglas County is here to share essential tips for new ‍pet owners as we step into the New Year.

During the festive season, many families decide⁣ to add a furry companion ‌to their ‌household. For those who have ⁣adopted a new pet, it’s important to remember that this addition is not ⁤just a gift; it‌ comes ⁢with significant responsibilities. The Douglas County Humane Society offers valuable advice for individuals bringing home ‍a new animal, ensuring that dogs,⁣ cats, and other pets do not ⁣end up‍ in shelters.

Jule Hand, the Fundraising and Outreach Coordinator at the humane society, notes that ther tends to⁢ be an⁤ increase in adoptions during the holiday period. one crucial ‌piece of advice she emphasizes is the importance of pet-proofing your living space to keep both⁤ your new furry friend safe and protect your ⁢belongings.

“Pets are adjusting to their ⁢new environment and⁣ may take some ⁢time before they feel cozy,” Hand explained. “Pet-proofing⁣ is essential—especially for dogs who might chew on items or cats ⁣that may scratch furniture.”

While most pets⁢ are‍ adopted with⁣ good intentions, they require both time and financial investment.Hand points out that not every family may be prepared for this commitment. She⁣ recommends establishing routines early on—such as feeding schedules and outdoor walks—to help integrate pets smoothly into family life.

“You’ll want to ⁣maintain your own property while‍ also‌ considering theirs,”⁢ she added.⁤ “They’re learning⁣ about their surroundings and how your lifestyle operates; it’s‍ about working together ‌as a cohesive unit.”

Hand also stresses the importance of ensuring all family members are ready for ‍this‌ new addition. Caring ‍for a⁢ pet involves considerable effort.

If you find yourself ⁣struggling as a first-time pet owner—whether it’s concerns ⁣about‍ behavior or eating habits—don’t hesitate to reach ⁤out for assistance. “Throughout the year, we see over 100 animals come through our ⁤doors,” ⁢Hand⁣ mentioned. “Currently, we have⁣ around 12 available for adoption while many more await‍ in our care⁤ facilities. There’s‌ always an ongoing need for finding loving⁤ homes for these animals.”
