A new collaboration in North Texas is enabling individuals to receive critical medical care without the worry of leaving their pets behind.
Parkland memorial Hospital has partnered wiht the SPCA of Texas to launch an initiative aimed at improving health outcomes for both humans and their furry companions.
When Establish deveraux arrived at Parkland due to severe congestive heart failure, his primary concern was his German shepherd, Sapphire.
“She wouldn’t let anyone near me, and I was terrified that I might lose her,” Deveraux recounted.
In response,the staff at Parkland reached out to the SPCA of Texas.Behavior supervisor Dre Floyd stepped in to help gain Sapphire’s trust.
“I had a secret weapon: a pack of hot dogs,” Floyd shared with a smile.
The SPCA took care of Sapphire over the following days, allowing Deveraux to concentrate on his recovery. Now, they are happily reunited.

“They truly cared for my dog,” he expressed. “I can’t imagine what I would do if something happened to her. She relies on me for safety,and I do everything within my power to ensure that.”
The idea for this program originated when Parkland staff observed an increase in patients arriving at the emergency room accompanied by pets.
“We understand that individuals living alone or those facing homelessness may hesitate to seek medical attention if it means parting with their pet or leaving them unattended,” explained Sarah Sheek, director of life-saving operations at SPCA.”This initiative addresses that concern.”
Parkland identifies patients who qualify for this service,effectively removing a critically important barrier to healthcare access. “Patients can come in knowing we will assist them in receiving necessary medical treatment while ensuring their animals are well cared for,” stated Danielle Hernandez, director of care coordination at Parkland.
Both organizations believe this approach fosters trust and builds relationships that enhance follow-up care after treatment is received.
