Support for Pets During the Holiday Season in Anchorage
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - As the holiday season approaches, food banks across the state are receiving generous contributions. However, it’s not just humans who benefit from this spirit of giving; pets are also set to receive significant support from Anchorage Animal care and Control (AACC).
A Community Initiative to Alleviate Stress
“Our community pet food bank is a program we initiated to help ease some of the pressures families face,” explained Joel Jorgensen, AACC’s Community Outreach Manager. Financial constraints often add to these pressures during this time of year.
The Impact of Budget Constraints
According to Jorgensen, “On average, we assist around 400 different households each month.” He noted that during the holiday season, demand at their food bank considerably increases due to events like Thanksgiving and christmas.
more Than Just Food: Additional Support for pets
AACC is also distributing items such as toys, collars, and leashes alongside pet food. “The last thing anyone should have to do during Christmas or any holiday is give up their pet due to financial issues. It’s unfair both to the animal and the family that cares for them,” Jorgensen emphasized.
The Generosity of Local donors
This mission is supported by local donors like Megan Miller. She shared her experience: “I come here every fall for my dog’s vaccinations and thought I could contribute in some way. While shopping at Carrs recently, I noticed cat food on sale and decided it was a perfect prospect.”
The High Demand for Cat Food
Miller’s donation came at an opportune moment since cat food has become one of the most sought-after items at AACC’s shelter. “Currently, our greatest need is cat food—both wet and dry varieties—as it remains our most requested item in the food bank,” Jorgensen stated.
Open doors for Donations Every Day
AACC welcomes donations seven days a week along with pickups for those in need.
