Addressing Pet Hunger: A Collaborative Effort to Support Families in Need
According to PetSmart Charities, approximately 30 million pets in the United States reside in households facing food insecurity. In recognition of Pet Starvation Awareness Day on September 30, this organization joined forces with feeding America to provide pet food at local distribution events nationwide.
the Growing demand for Food Assistance
Recent statistics from Feeding America reveal that over 50 million individuals sought assistance from food banks—marking the highest demand seen in a decade. Alarmingly, 63% of representatives from these food banks report that their current supplies of pet food are insufficient to meet the growing need.
Upcoming Events for Pet Owners
This year, on September 30, pet owners can access essential resources at four designated Feeding America partner locations:
A Year-Round Commitment to Alleviating Pet Hunger
The aforementioned events are part of an ongoing initiative by PetSmart Charities aimed at combating pet hunger. This programme includes quarterly deliveries of pet food to partner food banks across the nation, ensuring continuous support for families throughout the year.
“As families grapple with food insecurity, they often face heart-wrenching decisions—such as having to give up beloved pets,” stated Aimee Gilbreath, president of PetSmart Charities. “We want these families to know they are not alone and that help is available.”
Strengthening Partnerships for Greater Impact
“We appreciate our invaluable partnerships with Feeding America and Meals on Wheels America,” Gilbreath added. “These collaborations enable us to extend our reach and ensure that families receive vital resources—including those needed for their pets.” she emphasized how such efforts can definately help keep families united during challenging times while encouraging other service organizations to consider including pet-related support as well.
The Reality of Food Insecurity among Neighbors
Feeding America’s data indicates that 52% of community members reported running out of food within the past year before having enough funds available to purchase more. As initiating its partnership with feeding America in 2017, PetSmart Charities has contributed nearly 70 million pounds of pet food through this network.
“In every community across the United States, people are striving hard to provide for themselves and their loved ones—both human and animal,” remarked Erika Thiem, chief supply chain officer at Feeding America.”With basic necessities becoming increasingly unaffordable for millions, hunger remains a pressing crisis in our country. We value our ongoing collaboration with PetSmart Charities as we work together towards ensuring every family member—including pets—has access to adequate nutrition.”
Aiding Senior Citizens and Their Pets Together
Additonally, PetSmart Charities collaborates with Meals on Wheels America specifically targeting senior citizens who own pets. Together they have achieved a significant milestone by delivering over 15 million meals tailored for seniors and their furry companions nationwide. Research conducted by Meals on Wheels revealed that more than one-fifth of clients admitted sacrificing their own meals so they coudl feed their pets rather.
