Unique Pet Surrender Event in Prescott: A Compassionate Solution
PRESCOTT — Do you find yourself with an exotic pet that no longer fits into yoru life? J&R Aquatic Animal rescue (JRAAR), in collaboration with the Great River Road Visitor and Learning Center, is hosting a complimentary Exotic Pet Surrender Event on Friday, August 9, from noon to 2 p.m.
This event offers a compassionate and judgment-free opportunity for pet owners to surrender exotic animals that have become arduous to manage, unwanted, or simply not suitable for their current circumstances—no questions will be asked.
What Animals Can Be surrendered?
Accepted species include fish, invertebrates, reptiles, birds typically kept as pets, small mammals like hamsters and guinea pigs, and even certain plants. However, traditional pets such as dogs and cats are not eligible for this event; owners of these animals are encouraged to reach out to local shelters instead.
The Importance of Responsible Pet Ownership
Macy Yohr, an Invasive species Specialist at JRAAR stated: “Many invasive species start off as pets that were never intended to be released into natural habitats. Events like this provide a responsible and humane option—one that safeguards both the animals involved and our ecosystems.”
Event Highlights
The day will feature live animal ambassadors showcasing various species along with educational resources aimed at raising awareness about responsible pet ownership.Attendees can also enjoy a fun photo booth where they can capture memories alongside rescued animals. After a brief quarantine period post-surrendering process, many of these animals will be available for adoption through JRAAR’s extensive network.
A Collaborative Effort for conservation
This significant initiative is supported by a coalition of conservation organizations including the Pet advocacy Network and the University of wisconsin Sea Grant/Water Resources Institutes. Generous sponsorship from Petco Love further enhances this community-focused event.
