SOUTH BEND, IN (WSBT) — as temperatures soar during summer heat waves, it’s crucial for pet owners to take necessary precautions to protect their furry companions.
Understanding the Risks of heat Exposure for pets
While humans can feel the effects of extreme heat, pets are equally vulnerable and require special attention. Adjusting outdoor activities, ensuring a constant supply of fresh water, and avoiding hot surfaces are essential steps in safeguarding your pet’s well-being.
“When temperatures reach around 90 degrees Fahrenheit outside, pavement can exceed over 120 degrees,” stated Genny Brown, Executive Director of the Humane Society of St. Joseph County.”If you can’t comfortably place your hand or foot on the ground for a few seconds without discomfort, it’s too hot for your pet.”
The Speed at Which Overheating Can Occur
Pets can suffer from overheating in as little as fifteen minutes under high temperatures. Various factors contribute to this risk.
“Older animals, those with excess weight or short snouts—like Bulldogs—are more susceptible to heat-related illnesses compared to younger pets or those with lighter coats,” explained Brown.
Indoor Activities: A Safer Alternative During Heat Waves
Dedicating time indoors is frequently enough the best way to keep pets cool during extreme weather conditions.
“Make sure you have engaging toys and activities available inside,” advised Brittni Gendron, Director of South Bend Animal Resource Center. “As outdoor exercise may not be feasible during these times, providing enrichment through toys and training will help keep them stimulated.”
The Necessity of Hydration and Shelter for Outdoor Pets
A notable number of households own dogs that enjoy spending time outdoors; though, experts emphasize that these animals must have access to ample water and shaded areas where they can retreat from the sun’s harsh rays.
“during heat advisories in our area,” Brown noted further, “we enforce regulations requiring outdoor dogs be brought into temperature-controlled environments because even they cannot withstand excessive heat indefinitely.”
Recognizing Signs of Heat Stress in Pets
Paw owners should be vigilant about signs indicating their pets may be suffering from heat exhaustion or stroke. Symptoms include unusual behavior such as vomiting or lethargy.
“If it’s too warm outside for you,” Gendron cautioned,” it’s definitely too warm for them as well! We must remember that our pets are part of our family; we need to care for them just like we woudl any other loved one.”
