Innovative Solution for Pet Safety During Fires
In the unfortunate event of a fire, pets often become victims, primarily due to smoke inhalation. Recent estimates from the american Veterinary Medical Association indicate that approximately 40,000 pets lose their lives annually in residential fires, with around 500,000 animals impacted in various ways.
the birth of Rescue retriever
This alarming statistic inspired Rusty Tussing from Gilbert and his twin brother Capt. Ryan Tussing of the Avondale Fire Department to create an innovative device known as Rescue Retriever. Founded two years ago in Gilbert, this company aims to assist firefighters in locating household pets during emergencies.
The Rescue Retriever is a unique paw-shaped smoke detector that emits a shining strobe light designed to alert first responders about the presence of pets inside a home. This simple yet crucial notification system helps firefighters prioritize their search efforts effectively.
Design and Production Challenges
Given that many animals instinctively hide when danger approaches, placing the Rescue Retriever on pet crates or nearby safe spots can significantly enhance rescue chances during a fire incident. Kristi Tussing, Ryan’s wife and co-founder of the company, explained that while the patented design is manufactured overseas in China before being shipped back to their headquarters for final assembly, they initially faced several hurdles during growth.
“One of our biggest challenges was navigating through manufacturing processes since we had never developed a product like this before,” Kristi shared. “it involved learning on-the-go and figuring out how to bring our vision into reality.” the journey from concept to market took roughly six months onc they finalized their invention.
A Mission Driven by Heartbreak
The idea for this life-saving device stemmed from personal experiences; Ryan witnessed firsthand the heartbreak associated with losing family pets in house fires. “I have had to deliver devastating news about lost pets far too often,” he stated. “We do everything possible as firefighters to save them but frequently don’t even know they are there.” With Rescue Retriever,he hopes not only to alert emergency personnel but also guide them toward areas where pet owners believe their animals might be hiding.
A Shared Vision Between Brothers
While many might expect twin brothers like Rusty and ryan would follow similar paths throughout life, Rusty humorously noted that he prefers focusing on business rather than heroics: “I leave all the heroic stuff up to my brother.” He emphasized how both brothers thrive under pressure—Ryan as a firefighter and Rusty as an entrepreneur—highlighting how these skills converge within their joint venture.
“Being an entrepreneur can be just as demanding as firefighting,” Rusty remarked. “We both care deeply for our teams while making critical decisions aimed at leading everyone toward success.” Their shared commitment has culminated in creating not just a product but also reinforcing familial bonds through mutual love for animals and community safety.
A Bright Future Ahead
As they continue developing Rescue Retriever further into communities across America, both brothers express hope that it will make critically importent strides towards saving more beloved family pets during emergencies—a mission fueled by compassion and innovation alike.
