Google recently hosted its major I/O developer conference and product unveiling in California.Continuing its trend from previous years, Google is doubling down on artificial intelligence (AI). During the keynote address at I/O, company leaders unveiled a range of innovative AI features set to enhance various products. These advancements are integrated into Android, Search, Gemini, and—soon—some of Google’s smart eyewear.
We’ve already covered the event live. Here’s a comprehensive overview of what Google introduced at I/O.
The Power of Gemini
The Google Assistant, once a staple digital helper on your smartphone, is being gradually supplanted by Google’s new AI powerhouse: Gemini.
A multitude of updates for gemini were announced, with the standout feature being Gemini Live. This innovative tool merges inputs from your phone’s camera with voice commands and an agent-like functionality that allows it to browse the internet, make calls, and gather information on your behalf. It builds upon last year’s experiments known as Project Astra where Google’s machine learning capabilities could interpret visual information through a connected camera while understanding key details about your surroundings to perform hands-free tasks based on natural language requests.
Gemini will also be integrated into Google’s productivity applications; one notable addition is in Gmail called Customized Smart Replies. This feature leverages AI to analyze your unique writing style and preferred syntax—gleaned from all your notes, emails, documents, and spreadsheets—to generate personalized responses to emails that reflect how you typically communicate.
“With personalized smart replies, I can be more responsive,” stated alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai during his keynote speech as he shared how he utilizes this feature for replying to friends’ inquiries that he might otherwise overlook due to his busy schedule as CEO.
The aforementioned features will be available free for Android users and those using Google’s web applications; however, additional premium functionalities will require a paid subscription. The previously named $20 monthly AI Premium service has been rebranded as Google AI Expert but retains its original offerings while adding new minor features. Simultaneously occurring,Google AI Ultra, which encompasses the full suite of their AI services now costs $250 per month—a $50 increase compared to OpenAI’s similar comprehensive plan ChatGPT Pro.
Gemini: A Creative Force
Creative professionals take note: Google’s upgrades in creative tools may simplify your work or potentially render some roles obsolete.
The tool known as Jules, described as an “asynchronous coding assistant,” aims to transform rough sketches or ideas into fully developed illustrations or code while providing insights into its process along the way.
Additonally announced was an upgraded version of Google’s image generation software called Imagen 4 which promises enhanced detail in images such as textures within generated artwork or custom text within promotional posters.

An example showcased by the company featured a whimsical scene where an elderly man rides an oversized chicken in his car ; although it appeared somewhat surrealistic , it effectively conveyed its intended message .
additionally included is Veo 3 ,an improved video generator boasting enhanced understanding material physics resulting smoother animations.
