National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day: A Call to Action

Understanding⁢ the Current Situation in Shelters

PORTLAND (WGME) — This Wednesday is recognized as National Adopt a shelter pet Day.

The Animal Refuge League⁣ of Greater Portland, located ‌in Westbrook, reports that‌ it ‌provides care for thousands ⁤of abandoned and displaced animals each ⁤year.

The Challenges Facing Shelters Today

Despite the day’s significance, shelter ⁢officials are reporting ⁢an increase in the number of dogs⁢ being taken in while adoptions have decreased.

‌Matt blanchard from the Animal Refuge League ‍attributes this trend to ‌various ‌factors affecting pet owners.“One major reason we’re seeing people surrender their ‌pets right‍ now is due ‍to housing instability and financial challenges,” he ⁢explained. “It’s heartbreaking because these individuals genuinely want to⁤ keep ⁢their pets but are facing‍ tough circumstances.”

According to recent statistics from the American ⁣Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), approximately one in five ⁣pet owners⁣ have considered giving up their pets due to economic hardships.

h2>Ways You‍ Can Make a Difference

If adopting isn’t feasible for you at this time, there ⁤are ⁣several other ways you can contribute positively:

⁤ ‌ – Consider making ⁤a donation directly to your local shelter.
⁣ – ‍Volunteer your time; shelters often need extra⁤ hands.
‍ – If long-term commitment isn’t possible, think about fostering an animal temporarily.

‍ On this special day, ‍any donations made will be matched by sponsors up to $15,000—making your contribution even more impactful.

⁢ Together we can⁢ make a difference in the lives of these deserving animals!
